The End of Eternity Coming Your Way!
Well...not quite yet. Isaac Asimov's well-regarded 1955 novel has been optioned by New Regency, the studio behind such recent movies as Jumper and The Fountain. Variety reports that the producers will try to get a director attached before hiring a writer. The movie has been attempted before, but never with any success. Most recently, Ridley Scott and Tom Cruise took a shot at it with Paramount.
Variety tells us that "the Asimov novel is a futuristic tale in which humanity is controlled by a ruling class called Eternity, member [sic] of which can manipulate time to alter history and prevent disasters or wipe out undesirables. One of the time cops flirts with disaster when he breaks the cardinal Eternity rule and falls in love with a woman from another time period."
New Regency is looking for tentpole films to build around, and the premise for this movie sounds like it could become something pretty epic in scope. Hopefully they find the right helmer for this project and turn it into something worth getting excited over. I'm already a little bummed that Ridley Scott wasn't able to pull this one off; it would have been an appropriately cool return to science fiction for him. We'll keep an eye on this one and see how it turns out.
